• First note and lots of emotion

    I've been thinking about it for a while, admiring Claude actually for managing two blogs at the same time and Silver Tiger has convinced me. From now on, as well as writing in French about my daily life, I will try to write in English too. And this will be the place ! As it is more difficult for me though I teach English in France, I may not publish new texts as regularly as I do on my other blog. I hope you will be understanding.

    Writing or telling something in a foreign language is not just another exercise. It means letting oneself seen from another point of view, revealing another facet of one's character. Believe it or not, I feel different emotions, reactions, when I speak or think in English.  If you happen to be a reader of both blogs, please tell me when you notice such a difference.

    For those who don't know me yet, I've been teaching English for 25 years, including the last 13 years in a high school. I'm a woman and will be reaching 50 next July, which is, as you will soon realize, a real trauma to me. I share my life with someone I will refer to as ADMV (as it means something in French, you may even guess what !), she is a woman too. Ed is not my real name, but things being what they are, I'd rather remain anonymous, as some members of our National Education have already got into troubles when their identity was known, even though they hadn't actually criticised anyone namely, or told any lies. Moreover I may mention some details of my private life which are none of my pupils or colleagues' business.

    Forgive me if what I write happens to be boring, I feel shy you see, and your comments will help me improve my writing.

    Funny how you are starting a blog in English when I am about to take a holiday on my French blog! ;) Keeping several blogs is a lot of work even for a happy retired teacher. Lots of luck to you on this new venture!

    New Blog!
    Congratulations on your new blog. Well done! I have added to my blogroll and to my RSS reader. And such a lot to think about in your first post, too! All deserving answers. First in line, 50 is a nice age. Believe me, it's good. An elegant age. You will love it. Celebrate it and enjoy it. Secondly, you are right about how one thinks and feels differently in different languages. This is why you find that bilingual people tend to use each language for specific purposes. In Alsace, for example, people talk about work and politics in French and about domestic things in Alsacien. Even walking about in London I think about certain things in French. I sometimes forget and talk to Tigger in French she doesn't understand it. Nice to hear about your life. I have been a teacher but wouldn't want to be one again! I think teachers in France are more professional and better prepared academically than teachers in England. It's still a tough job,though, so good luck with it. Looking forward to further posts here and on your French blog.

    La consigne en français : Pourquoi ne pas essayer ? Un mot, puis deux, puis trois, puis une phrase, etc. Come on !

    @SilverTiger
    Thanks for your long comment. Have you stayed in Alsace ? That's an area where I have some friends, and I'm fond of the atmosphere there. I don't know about the difference in training in our countries, but what I know is that everything new in our teaching methods and organisation has to be "European", and I'm not sure I'm very keen on that...

    is a little more than necessary. That's why I've erased 3. But nevertheless I'm very happy to see you here, Telle. Some things seem to be difficult to deal with here, like having a blog roll with a list of all my friends appear on my blog.

    Hi
    I can read and speak in english, but it's very hard for me to write. I've learned english at school, but I think I have no remains of it. In fact I've learned by myself. In school, it was boring, but I'm too old for having you as a teacher ! Bon, c'était un vrai effort, et je ne suis pas certain d'avoir écrit correctement. En tout cas j'espère que l'enseignement a changé depuis mon passage à l'école. Comme dans bien des domaines en France, l'enseignement restait très théorique, très axé sur la grammaire en oubliant que la maîtrise d'une langue est d'abord fait pour échanger. Total, j'ai surtout vu des gens avec un bon niveau incapables de s'exprimer car ils redoutaient de faire une faute de prononciation ou de grammaire. Moi, je fais plein de fautes, mais j'arrive à m'exprimer en anglais sans trop de problème.

    Hi Jérôme
    I don't know how old you are. Indeed teaching methods have changed a lot. As a pupil, I saw a teacher use a tape recorder once ! It didn't prevent me from speaking English and liking it, whereas I've always been useless at maths. But it isn't only a question of teaching method.

    Salut! Just returning the visit :D Welcome to the blogosphere. I have two blogs, it can be a bit tricky but it's manageable! Mind you, I don't write one in another language - maybe I should? Hmmm... Em
